I TEACH HOLD EM

Roger is the nuts, in poker, in teaching and in performing.  Listening to him will entertain and educate you.

I was getting kicked around in a private poker game with my friends.  Shortly after a couple of sessions with Roger, I won a televised Celebrity Poker Tournament.  He's the best!

When the director from LUCKY YOU asked me if I could recommend a top quality poker coach for Robert Duvall and Eric Bana, I told him "That's easy...Roger Rodd."

Teaching Texas Holdem To The Stars And You.

by Roger Rodd

During my senior year at Stanford University, where I graduated with honors, I paid my room and board with poker winnings gained in fraternity house and private poker games. Around this time, LIFE MAGAZINE ran an article describing the new poker game "Hold Me Darlin", as the Texas high roller's preference to "Five Card Stud". I then began to study, play, and introduce into private homes this game that would eventually be named "Texas Hold 'em".

After graduation, I opted for private games in lieu of public card rooms where only Lowball, Draw Poker, and Pan were permitted. I often traveled to the casinos of South Lake Tahoe and Reno, where the largest and only Holdem games existed. They were one to five dollar limit games, spread only on weekends. Earning more from poker than my post graduate employment offered, I quit my day job and became a professional poker player.

I learned the hard way...

Following a few years of local success, I brought my skills to Las Vegas where I learned that I was a "home town boy". Translated that means, "Back home all the suckers call him a gambler. Out here all the gamblers call him a sucker". Leaving Vegas with a decimated bankroll and equally bruised ego, I wisely bought and studied the best poker books available.

It is an unfortunate fact that loss produces the greatest learning potential. I chose positive self critique and introspection over the more inviting option of blaming bad luck. I rapidly recovered my Vegas losses and eventually maintained a solid record of earnings at the casino poker level.

Since the "Gold Rush" of the late 1980's, when Holdem came to California casinos, there has been no bigger boost to poker than the combination of Internet gambling and televised tournaments. Poker in America now enjoys its largest popularity since its inception. I welcome the opportunity to introduce and enlighten the many newcomers and journeyman players to the vast, esoteric culture of poker. My extensive background and long term status as a winning player both qualify and validate my many years spent on the circuit.

Group and Private Holdem Lessons

Although functioning as an independent contractor, I currently hold private and group lessons at Hollywood Park Casino. While the beginner's level is most frequently requested, novice and advanced enrollment continues to skyrocket. Televised celebrity poker events are expanding an already established list of stars, however I staunchly protect the anonymity of every client.

Whether you play recreationally, would like to graduate from the Internet to live games, or you long for the professional circuit, you will find my hands on approach to be invaluable. No honest poker instructor can promise to make you a winning player. I can guarantee that you will learn what it takes to become one.
